I try to follow the above philosophy with each and every one of my clients regardless of their mental, physical or cognitive health, immigration or legal status, relious beliefs, economic situation, gender, age, culture or time they have seen me in therapy. For the last 16 years as a psychotherapist I have witnessed the healing that occurs when one person witnesses and acknowledges the core truth of the other; allowing hope to foster and grow.
Let me tell you a story of how I interact with my clients:
My assessment showed that this client could not read or write or learn English. She could not add or subtract. It many ways she could not learn. As expected my assessment showed the extent of her cognitive impairment and rather extensive psychological problems. But that was only part of the story. Through my sessions with her I was able to witness her true spirit in action and help her recognize aspects of her core self that was still there through all of her trauma. I helped her become an American citizen and helped her recognize her true self.
